Travel Diaries | A Short Trip across the Globe - Beijing

A Confusing New World or Déjà Vu

Typically not one to get easily lost, I have found that it is oh-so-NOT hard to get lost in Beijing! Language barrier aside (as being an obvious peril), the Chinese culture for signage is mesmerizing. In my experience, the Western world is rather selective when it comes to statements via signs and it assigns prominence according to a sign's relevance (e.g. "Enter" is rather prominent when you approach an attraction, the "Exit" sign is always clearly marked and you can rest assured that you can see those two much quicker than, for example, a sign pointing for Cinderella's castle - except, of course, if you are on your way to the castle - all about relevance!).

Not in China! Everything here demands equal opportunity for your attention and I find that fascinating and somewhat scary, especially when I was able to get lost twice in two days: once in Sun Park (which is a HUGE park with controlled access and only 4 entrances/exits) and the Forbidden City (I circled around a few times before I was able to understand the proper flow). Yes - I blame it on signage and nothing else (such as jet lag, lack of sleep, and general disorientation).

Yet this highly planned and sometimes counter-intuitive organization has left me quite charmed. As I walk Beijing's streets, I feel oddly at home. Sudden flashbacks to Bulgaria's centralized urban planning of the late 70's and early 80's is witnessed on a much grander scale here. An odd meeting of vastly different cultures (the Far East historical and cultural richness, the Western popular and financial culture, and the highly planned and organized society of modern China) somehow appears to just work, like a well-oiled machine.

I like it here even though jet lag IS proving to be more brutal than expected (thus a blog post at the local time of 5:15AM). I am excited to take on my next Chinese journey though - trying out the local food. Wish me good luck!

Well, That Took "Long" ... Back to the Japanese Gardens!

The Ideal Saturday Morning...

...Is when you are not in a rush to do anything and you grab your coffee, book and camera and go to the park. And even more so, when you are able to fulfill a promise you made the day before (which in this case was going back to Hermann Park's Japanese Gardens to capture their full glory in full daylight). This truly was a glorious morning - a crisp 54 degrees F, clear blue skies, and lovely vistas. Thank you Houston for having so much to offer at the unbeatable price of $0.

Houston at Dusk | Hermann Park's Japanese Gardens

Spontaneous Garden Visits Are Sweet

I have wanted to visit the Japanese Gardens at Hermann Park for years. And I truly mean years. Yet their challenging hours of operation are rather hard to work with (5PM... really?). Yesterday, I got lucky! With the garden's gates being questionably and invitingly wide open after 6PM, my accomplice and I were able to sneak right in. Daylight was quickly dwindling though and my first attempts at fighting the natural environment and overcompensating via digital camera trickery fell rather flat. So I had a revelation - why fight it? Instead, use it! I am not very good at dusk photography but I saw an opportunity for learning. Here are the first attempts... (with one fabulous action shot as well).

On a side note, the gardens are just as beautiful as I imagined. I hope to be able to be back and spend some more quality time there very soon. And possibly take some full daylight shots of it while at it. :)

Houston Favorites | Hermann Park

Yet Another Reason to Love Houston

I have loved Houston's Hermann Park ever since I made my first visit here a few years ago (has it been 6 and a half years already?). Primarily because some of the most spectacular sunsets I have ever seen have occurred here (and yesterday was no exception) and because it is within a short walking distance from some of the best museums in the nation (the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Natural Science, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Health, the Children's Museum - all within less than a mile from here).

To top that, yesterday marked the cutting ribbon ceremony of a wonderful addition to the park I cannot wait to start enjoying - the Centennial Gardens. Even though they are not quite finished yet (having a rainy season has its pros and cons - no need to water your lawn vs slower construction than anticipated) but I can already tell this will be one of my frequent weekend stops.

The entire setting is comfortably reminiscent of LA's Huntington Library or San Francisco's botanical gardens yet on a tad smaller and thus more practical and enjoyable scale. The architecture of the Cherry Flores Garden Pavilion is a lovely, light and modernized throw-back to my all-time favorite mid-century modern period.

All in all, just another reason to add to my millions of other reasons as to why I love Houston so much (being able to hang upside down on the century-old oak trees in the area is clearly another one).

Happy Sunday!

Houston Favorites | Memorial Park

Welcome to my Zen Place

Before I moved to Houston, my only city park experience in the US had been the finely managed and manicured grounds of NYC's Central Park. And although I still find Central Park to be my most favorite place there (High Line, you are a very close second...), I have come to really love my hometown park for its natural and unruly beauty.

Most importantly, it is the one place where all worries are forgotten and everything seems to start anew.  My cherished 3-mile (well, technically 2.92-mile) daily runs there are something I always look forward to, be it 100F, or a stormy Houston day.

Today, I got weather-lucky and thought I might take a few pictures of the pretty skies and inspiring greens. Now, I am all ready to take on this week! Happy (almost) Monday!

Happy Name Day, Mom!

I have written about the Bulgarian tradition of Name days before but today is a special day to bring up the topic again - it is my mom's Name day! Name days (имени дни) in Bulgaria are usually associated with Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox celebrations of the saint you are named after. And they are as important as Birthdays are in the US.

A fun fact? By an ancient Bulgarian tradition, everybody is welcome on Name days (there is no need to invite guests, they just show up at your house - quite an opportunity for your party-prone friends, don't you think?). Presents are expected though.

If you are to show up at your friends' place for their Name day, it's good to know that common well-wishes include "May you hear your name from grandchildren and great-grandchildren!" (Да чуеш името си на внуци и правнуци!), "May you hear your name only in good things!" (Да ти се чува името само за добро!) and "May your name be healthy and well!" (Да ти е живо и здраво името!) (thank you, Wikipedia for reminding me of that ...).

So there you have it - mom, please expect a horde of folks at your door today. They should be bringing presents with them though.

HAPPY NAME DAY to the BEST mom in the world!!!

Travel Diaries | Baton Rouge, LA

Where Catfish and a Tiger Live Happily Ever After!

Welcome to Baton Rouge, the proud home of one famous tiger (well, 6 famous tigers - Mike VI is the 6th generation of Louisiana State University mascots and a proud owner of a rather posh pad right in the middle of campus!), amazing fried food (my personal favorite has to be the delicious fried catfish), and a unique type of sporting on water (long story short - in LA, you can only gamble on water - except for New Orleans - and the newest casino in Baton Rouge is a rather stationary hotel built on top of the Mississippi river - aka water).

If you do get a chance to visit Baton Rouge, here were my two absolute favorite food joints:

  • Bistro Byronz - a charming bistro where I can vouch for their Debris Sandwich and to-die-for Carrot Souffle.
  • The Burgersmith - check out the Turkey Burger and Slider, absolutely delicious with a very wide range of craft beers on tap!
